Health Staff
Camp Counselor
Position: Health Staff
Southern Maine String Camp is seeking a qualified healthcare professional to serve as the Camp Health Staff for our one-week overnight music camp. This individual plays a vital role in supporting the physical and emotional well-being of campers in a welcoming, community-focused environment.
The Health Staff member lives on campus for the duration of the camp and is a visible, supportive presence for campers, staff, and families.
Key Responsibilities
Medication Management
Oversee and administer camper medications throughout the day (morning, mid-day, and nighttime meds) according to provided instructions and schedules
Maintain accurate records using a pre-existing camper health database
Camper Check-In
Meet with parents/guardians on the first day of camp to collect medications
Review medical needs and answer any health-related questions
Camper Care & Support
Provide basic medical care and first aid as needed
Support campers experiencing homesickness, anxiety, or minor physical complaints
Serve as a calm, reassuring presence for campers adjusting to being away from home
Overnight Care
Be available for occasional, but rare, overnight illness
Supervise campers who may need to stay overnight in the infirmary (extra beds provided)
Collaboration
Communicate with camp leadership regarding any health concerns
Be aware of camper allergies and dietary restrictions (managed in coordination with YMCA kitchen staff)
Living Arrangements
On-campus residency required for the full camp session
Private bedroom and bathroom located within the camp infirmary
All meals provided
Qualifications
Currently licensed healthcare professional (RN, LPN, MD, PA, NP, Paramedic, or EMT)
Note: Professionals with out-of-state licenses will need to obtain a Maine license through the Maine State Board of Nursing, unless your state has reciprocity.
Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in a healthcare setting
Strong organizational and communication skills
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment
Experience working with children is a plus

This is a unique role that blends healthcare with community engagement. The pace is generally steady and manageable, with occasional moments requiring prompt attention. Much of the role involves organization, preventative care, and offering reassurance to campers.

Position: Camp Counselor
Looking for a meaningful summer music camp job? Join us at Southern Maine String Camp, a one-week overnight program for violin, viola, cello, and bass students. Held at the YMCA Camp of Maine on Lake Cobbosseecontee, our camp combines high-quality string music education with the classic Maine summer camp experience.
We’re hiring enthusiastic and responsible camp counselors to guide campers through music rehearsals, daily activities, and camp life. This is an excellent opportunity for college music majors, music educators, and young professionals who want to gain teaching, leadership, and performance experience while spending a week immersed in music and nature.
Responsibilities
Supervise and support a group of campers as their bunk counselor, helping them feel at home and engaged.
Serve as a chamber music coach, sectional coach, and/or orchestra manager, working closely with ensembles in daily rehearsals.
Participate in fun camp traditions, waterfront activities, and evening events alongside campers.
Perform in the faculty orchestra concert and faculty recitals during the week.
Act as a positive role model and mentor, inspiring young string players in both music and personal growth.
Qualifications
Must play a stringed instrument: violin, viola, cello, or bass, with classical performance experience.
Current music major, music teacher, or high-level amateur with years of playing experience.
Prior teaching, coaching, or youth leadership experience is a plus.
Must love working with kids and be committed to creating a fun, supportive environment.
A true team player who brings creativity, flexibility, and enthusiasm to camp life.
Must be fully available from Saturday, August 8 (staff first day) through Saturday, August 15, 2026.
